On grey days or in winter I love nothing more than to be in the studio working on larger paintings—time to stand back, contemplate, change course..but today a break was needed –the day was too beautiful! I couldn’t help but indulge myself. With very little time I still managed to sneak out at 5PM, climb the hill, feel the sun on my face and paint. I will have to re-shoot tomorrow after I pick out the wee bits of grasses and what looks to be hair of dog.

  1. Is this what you painted when you sneaked out Jan? Or is this one of the large paintings you are working on in the studio? I know what you mean about that need to get out and feel the sun on your face. I took two days off to go out with family to the castle and the sea it was wonderful to feel the sun and fresh air, we need it to inspire us and to give us a feeling of well being. I love your painting the free brush work and lovely warm autumn colours you really have captured autumn in all of it's glory. I think that patch of blue takes the eye of the viewer right out into the distance.

  2. Hi Caroline,
This is my wee sneak-out painting. The castle and sea sound ideal--I am now reading some of Lillian Beckwith's novels--you surely must be familiar with this Scottish authour? Love how she describes the storms, sea and living with the raw wilds of the weather--set in the Hebrides?
Again a deep thanks for your comments re my paintings!

  3. Lovely free use of colour and a real autumn feel. Your paintings are so spontaneous! I would love to see them hanging together in a gallery. As to the grass and dog hair, I remember years ago painting plein air in the French countryside and being unable to mix the right red earth colour I needed for a ploughed field, so in the end I just scooped some of the real earth up, mixed it with water, and used that.

  4. Thanks for stopping by Sheila and for sharing your red earth recipe!

As far as my spontaneous paintings, I try so hard to be more controlled but when I am working outside I just can't!
